The process begins with locally sourced sheep’s wool, which is cleaned, brushed, and hand-spun into yarn. After dyeing the fibers rich, vibrant colors, the artisans weave the wool on massive wooden foot looms using techniques passed down for generations.

What makes these blankets truly unique is the hot spring felting tradition found only in Momostenango. Twice a week, the artisans carry freshly woven blankets to natural volcanic hot springs, where the steaming waters naturally shrink, soften, and felt the wool — creating the dense, plush texture Momo blankets are known for.

Once dried under the Guatemalan sun, each blanket receives a final softening treatment with brushes made from dried seed pods. The result? A thick, durable, heirloom-quality wool throw that is incredibly warm yet breathable, perfect for cozy winter nights, rustic home décor, or meaningful gifting.
